end table

Light coming from behind the end table lit a tissue - and I felt like drawing that, rather then the gadget I got yesterday. The gadget phone is all about doing and going and communicating. The piece of tissue is about sitting still, and looking windblown.

new phone

My first cell phone. Really. Now if only AT&T would activate it... but the site seems to be backed up, and tells me to wait for an email. Hope to be up and running tomorrow morning.

[Update: 8 a.m. Activation complete! And thanks to the Post-Gazette for the link and video interview. Happy weekend, everyone.]

tree down

A powerful thunderstorm with high winds swept through town right before supper. Water blew so hard across the front porch that it appeared white, and you couldn't see through it. Our old house floors shook with the thunder. The worst of the downpour didn't last long, though. Lights blinked, but we kept power. And after dinner, we went for a walk with some of the kids in the neighborhood to see what had happened. This tree was down across an alley a block from our house. Part of the crown was on another neighbor's garage, but from the street we couldn't tell if there was any significant damage. (To the garage, that is.) Caution tape kept people away from any downed wires. A neighbor walking her dog said there had been fire along one of the wires, and that she had called the fire trucks to put it out. Other trees were down, and we went to look at them, then stopped by the playground on the way home. The sun doesn't set until nearly nine, and we are keeping vacation hours. The storm has also broken the heat, and it is pleasant to be outside again.

en route

Painted in the car, somewhere on a back road in Virginia. The drive home was long but beautiful, as we took smaller roads where we could, and we had lots of time for talking, imagining new projects, playing the animal game and the alphabet game, and stopping at scenic overlooks. We bought peaches and pecans and ate them as we went along. We planned other trips. And at the very end, we just hung on and knew that we'd be home soon.

And so we are.

an invitation

My museum drawing project will be concluding a week from today, Saturday, June 30th. I can't quite believe it, but I've been making daily drawings in response to the Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History since the first of October. To celebrate the conclusion of the project, I invite any reader in the Pittsburgh area to meet me at the fountain entrance to the Museum of Art on Saturday at 11:00 in the morning. Bring a pencil and your favorite notebook and we can draw in the museum together. (And if drawing is not your thing, come write poetry, doodle, take photographs (where permitted :-) or otherwise keep me company.) We can spend a couple of hours and then go out for a late lunch. Thanks - I look forward to meeting you.

another peach

If a taste could be both luminous and earthy... I had this one for breakfast.

Ed. note: I may be off line for a couple of days - will keep drawing and post again as soon as I can, and definitely be back Tuesday.

Not local - not for while - but very very good. Ate one at lunchtime, while sitting in the sun, and enjoyed every bite, every moment.

clock tower

I had a moment before a class began this evening at the children's museum, so I made a sketch of the clock tower on the library. (Added the color after I got home.)

foot and pillow

Resting child after a long and busy weekend. Beginning yesterday, we rearranged the living room furniture and picked up the downstairs, rationalizing the game cupboard and the art cupboard, bringing in flowers, sweeping, wiping, putting away, so that the house would feel different and beautiful when my husband came home from a three-day work retreat this afternoon. We are not generally a tidy household (understatement), and the kids had to work hard to create this Father's Day surprise. Happy Father's Day to all who celebrate it!

still life

A cartography of the coffee table - or perhaps it's a very short story? The bowl may be approaching the glass and newspaper, or it may be leaving the scene. I'm not certain.

I do know that this is drawing number 900.

dollar bill

On the table in the living room - change returned from grocery shopping. The painting began with the natural colors of the dollar bill and then took a different turn when the stereo edge became blue and the wall became yellow and orange.

They have never seen the inside of a refrigerator. They scent the room. They taste like nothing else. By the time I got to them the quart was half empty and people asked me to finish my sketch so that they could eat more.

small bowl

Ornamental only, as it is made of plasticine pressed inside a clear plastic dish, but a cheerful addition to the coffee table, nonetheless. Someone has put a crumpled paper in it.

I was as intrigued by the layout of the pillows as by the fact that she is comfortable sleeping with her feet arranged this way - reminded me of an Egyptian wall painting somehow.

hot sauce

Hot night, hot sauce. We are not constant in our choice of brand - each sort has a different bouquet and that change is good from time to time and bottle to bottle.
