Your eraser makes me think of a technique used by an art teacher friend - she "draws" her preliminary layout on her watercolor paper with a pink pearl eraser. Then she follows the pink "crumbs" lightly with her soft drawing pencil, blows away the crumbs, and starts painting. It is easier to brush away a few crumbs when working out a composition than it is to erase a lot of pencil.
