knitting

day702.jpg

Gouache over white resist to show my son's knitting, left on the mantelpiece - an end of autumn garland...

ivy and yew

day700.jpg

This is daily sketch number 700. Didn't realize that when I began tonight, so rather than some symbolic anniversary gesture we have what was on the coffee table anyway, a loose arrangement of yew and ivy and a few drying leaves.

clementine rising

day699.jpg

Just can't resist them. We have eaten our way through a (tiny) crate of these clementines in less than a week, and I will get more when they are gone. The perfect sweet bite for the season.

city view

day698.jpg

We went to the skate park on Polish Hill today. While the skateboarder did his stuff, the rest of us drew or read or talked or played on the playground equipment. Here you can see the dome of the Immaculate Heart of Mary between the buildings on 30th street.

hand

day697.jpg

Pen and ink and then gouache. Experimenting with cool sketchy foreground and warm solid shadow, just to see how it looks and feels. (The shadow's color came from the color of the cover on our sofa.)

So fragrant and easy to peel. We have a bowlful in the center of the table.

At the end of a long and lovely day, one half-eaten bit of bread left on the table.

tissues

day693.jpg

Nobody has a cold right now, so we have a box full of tissues. (Whenever anyone is sick, we use them and run out.) I tend to use these for lifting and smudging colors.

squash, unknown variety

day691.jpg

Everyone is home for the first time since the beginning of September. I am thinking about the menu for Thursday - and for the rest of the week ahead. This squash has been a centerpiece in the dining room for a while, but it may become part of one of the feasts...

flowers

day690.jpg

The same bunch of flowers from ten days ago - given fresh water and a trim of stems, they are doing fine.

Welcome to visitors from Notebookism! I am honored and delighted to be a featured artist there today. You can explore my daily drawings here, and my drawings of the Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History are at the Museum Drawing Project. If you are curious about the materials I use, I have a post about them here.

Thanks for stopping by...

damp leaf

day688.jpg

The day began with rain, then cleared to blue sky with small puffy clouds. My daughter found this leaf tonight and handed it to me for drawing.

I love how you can get a little bag full of these tiny limes on sale for not much more than two or three regular ones.

Banana left over from snack at PodCamp Pittsburgh today, where I took part in conversations about podcasting and blogging. More of that tomorrow, too.

Sometimes a particular feeling is more important than accuracy. The more intuitive I let myself be, the more chances I take, the more I learn.

slate card

day679.jpg

At the polls volunteering all day, and now staying up WAY too late to listen to election returns. We saw very high turnout at my polling place - probably more than during the last presidential election. Good to talk with neighbors, and to know that so many people care about the direction of region and nation.

gerbera

day678.jpg

Discovered that the way to get the living room picked up is to buy flowers. Had to clean off the coffee table in order to have a place to put them.

acorn squash

day677.jpg

I forget how much I like winter squash until late in the year. They sit on the counter or in the pantry - sometimes pressed into service elsewhere as centerpiece or decoration. And eventually I get around to cooking them and can't believe I didn't do that sooner. Every year.

pear again

day676.jpg

What can I say? It was still on the table from yesterday. This time I used a mixture of media: blind contour with china marker, then gouache, then fountain pen.

sunset

day674.jpg

I stepped out of the museum today after drawing and stepped into a beautiful sunset. Now that some of the trees are bare you can see so much more sky, even in the middle of the city. So I stood still and painted, figuring I could always take a slightly later bus.

DrawMo!

People have begun to post wonderful daily drawings for the month of November over on DrawMo!. The goal is to draw something every day for the month, in the spirit of NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo.

I decided, why not add another daily drawing project to my life for a month? And to vary it from this blog, from the museum drawing project, and from the weekly Pittsburgh drawings I'm doing for clusterflock, I decided to see what would happen if I drew the same subject over and over for thirty days. So that's what I'm doing - all on one sheet of paper: thirty two-inch square sketches of the same tiny still life.
