newspaper story

PostGazette10.31.07.jpg If you are visiting woolgathering... after having read today's story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, welcome! I post a new drawing every day - you can bookmark this site if you like, or you can subscribe to the daily drawings via email for free, if you prefer. I try to keep posts open for comment, and welcome your responses.

If you are a regular visitor from another place and would like to know about the Pittsburgh blogging scene - the story gives a great overview. And midway through the article, reporter Mackenzie Carpenter writes about a conversation with me:

Ms. Perry ... learned to draw a few years ago.

"People told me that the way to learn to draw was to draw every day," she said. "So I did."

Ms. Perry hasn't stopped since. Every day, she posts a watercolor or drawing, delicate yet sharply observed, from her life: a glimpse of her feet on an ottoman, a sunflower losing its petals, the Clarion County Courthouse.

"I follow G.K. Chesterton's philosophy, which is, 'If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly,' and this sketch blog is a thing profoundly worth doing, even when I do it badly," she laughs. "I believe that sitting still and simply looking at something allows me to slow down and appreciate my ordinary surroundings in a new way. Drawing daily lets me take chances, make mistakes, and model that process in public."

(I'm delighted that the editors chose to print one of my drawings with the article, too.)

Cool! What a neat thing to be in the newspaper now. Altho it brings to mind a Daily Show quip...something like: "And that was Fox News telling you why Blogs are more interesting than they are".... anyways, check my blog for a recent post inspired by your blog!

have you done (or considered doing) a little autobio about how you and your art came to be a sensation? I have been very inspired by the concept of learning to draw by doing it every day. But where does your motivation come from, and how did you come to be such a successful blogger? You have published a book, been a public speaker, have amazing taste, draw, paint, write,(etc) every day, travel, teach, are a mother, and still make time to sit and drink a latte. I want to know how!

Please consider coming out to speak sometime in Portland or the Pacific Northwest. Have you ever been to Powells?

Thanks =)

Great story, but how did you manage suddenly to be three years OLDER than I am, instead of three months younger? Somebody didn't do his homework (in arithmetic) very well... Great to talk last night, will fill you in on any interesting details as they happen. XOXO, M.

Thank you all for your good wishes!

Katy - Your ideas sound great. I'll certainly think about a book, and I'd love any excuse to visit the Pacific Northwest.

and M - yes, the reporter got my age wrong. I'm thinking of it as a promotion!
