All packed. Headed out of town for a few days.

day2863.jpg

Dark-colored coleus cutting from someone else's garden. Hoping it will root and be an indoor plant for me this winter.

A quiet rainy day here. Thoughts are with all those in the path of the approaching storm.

day2861.jpg

The blue skies and warm days of this past week are gone. Rain, chill, verge of November. Sweater weather. Hoping that all on the East Coast in the path of the storm are safe and dry and well prepared, and hoping that the storm is less severe than some of the predictions...

day2857.jpg

Finally refilled my fountain pens after about a month without them. Forgot how much I like the texture of that kind of line.

Luminous, like the moon.

Peak color on the hillsides along the interstate as we drove home from a friend's daughter's wedding.

day2854.jpg

Leaves floating on the surface of a still stream. Tree branches were reflected. One of those calming moments where you remind yourself to breathe, to appreciate.

Another apple.  It's fall, and I keep looking at apples.

Left alone with a piece of string... (The Ashley Book of Knots was one of my favorite things as a child.)

Sycamore leaf, drawn with china marker as a negative space, and then painted.

day2848.jpg

I love the way some chrysanthemums look windswept - making me think about the fall landscape with its cool days, tossed leaves, spattering of rain.

day2847.jpg

Home again, and a good day for making applesauce.

day2846.jpg

Smooth flight home, and very clear skies. I love seeing the shapes of roads and the sparkling traces of city lights from above - like jewels on velvet.

Lots of traveling - striped sock on a motel bed, the night before the conference.

Painted from memory, then realized that I had put the moon in backwards.

Looks like a back-to-school drawing...

Bubbles looks on with interest as dinner is cooked. He'd already had his own dinner, and he doesn't actually beg, or even eat food from the floor without invitation, but he pays close attention whenever we do anything in the kitchen.

When I really stop to look at something, I see so much more than I expected. So many colors in one yellow apple, for instance.

pen

day2840.jpg

This ballpoint pen looks as if it's getting ready for Hallowe'en. The part that attaches the pocket clip seems like a tiny mask to me. A pen with an attitude.

day2839.jpg

Suddenly the backyard is showing color - I looked out this afternoon and realized that the serviceberry tree had started turning gold, a sign of autumn.

Necklaces.  Never thought about them as neck laces until I accidentally typed a space in the word a moment ago. Will look up the derivation tomorrow...

We have Gerber daisies in the house - the shapes are cheerful.

dog

day2836.jpg

We have a new dog - so you can expect to see more dog sketches in the coming days and weeks. (He's a very sweet 3 1/2 year old rescue pit bull mix, named Bubbles.)

Or Asian pear, as they are called at our supermarket. When I was growing up, we called them "nashi." I think it's the Japanese name for the fruit. Unripe, they are awful, but ripe, they have the crispness of an apple and the flavor of a pear.
