My last time beside the ocean for the summer - next weekend I'll be packing up and heading home to Pittsburgh.

day2405.jpg

My last weekend by the ocean for a while - then one more week of summer teaching, a weekend of packing, and home again. I look at one of my husband's zori, listen to the waves, breathe the salt-infused air, and try to appreciate the present moment.

My family has come for a quick visit to my apartment. Fun to be under one roof, even if we're a bit crowded.

The nectarine on the counter had me thinking about the sun and the horizon, so those ideas shaped my drawing today.

Fun to look at a crumpled paper towel on a white table and then to find the shape emerging from the page as I paint the shadows.

One last look before heading back to my city apartment.

And hot - not much breeze off the bay. But the view is restful, and I don't mind sitting still.

So happy to find new things to read in the guest room.

Did darning needles evolve to look like herons, or was it the other way around?

Found I'd skipped a pair of pages in my sketchbook, so I went back and drew there.

I keep thinking I hear knocking at the other end of the apartment living room - but no one is there. I'm not used to the tumble and rattle of an automatic ice maker as it works on its own schedule, behind the freezer door. Enough ice is such a luxury - especially in mid-summer.

I got a new blue shawl - wide,  lightweight, and cozy enough for summer air conditioning..

Red nylon zippered case. Contains one small robot, but that's another story.

The apartment has a tall narrow brown vase, filled with dry sticks and leaves.

Still life on the coffee table at home: cheese and wine.

Corner of a paper map that came with my summer apartment. Maps make me think of travel, and of how I'm looking forward to a visit home this coming weekend.

Overcast this morning, and the light was diffuse. I sat in a chair at the water's edge, moving back as the tide came in.

Sat in the sun for an hour this afternoon and watched the tide go out.
