March 2011 Archives

day2285.jpg

Somewhere over Montana.  My view was mostly wing and clouds, but later on, the Cascades were beautiful - lit by late afternoon sun as we flew past.

A string of flea market faux pearls, actually, but fun to wear anyhow.

The arch of the porch roof frames bits of our city neighborhood skyline.

I love the energy and messiness and enthusiasm of spring flowers.

Mostly closed yesterday, mostly open today. (Still from the store, though.)

Store-bought, as ours are not quite open.  Just a few more days...

Pink Pearl brand, I think, though this one's been used enough that the name is worn off.

First sign of spring in our yard: Abeliophyllum distichum, also called white forsythia or Korean abelia.  An undistinguished shrub for most of the year, it makes up for all that in March, when fragrant white blossoms arrive before the leaves.

I thought it was black when I pulled it from the shelf. Looked closer and saw the thread was purple.

Home for a night, and then off with the household to visit more family for the weekend.

Last studio morning of the visit - tomorrow I'll be home again.  Here's the twig I drew with yesterday, and the yogurt-lid palette marked up with watercolors and the marks of wet pastel sticks.

I'm so enjoying the time to look, to experiment with different materials in a different environment. For this studio still life, I made marks with a stick dipped in sepia acrylic ink, beginning the drawing with my eyes closed.  The line moved in unexpected ways as I gave over control to the skittering sputtering inky gesture, and then followed where it led me. So much to learn from experiments like this, and a great way to un-stick old habits. (The red is not ink, coming instead from a chalk pastel stick dipped in water.)

Spent the morning with my sister in her studio - got to see some of her recent work, and then the two of us settled in for a morning of painting and drawing.

Headed out of town for a visit to one of my sisters. I'll miss my family at home, but am looking forward to the trip - new views, new perspectives, and a slight shift in climate.

Blue skies and warm weather for walking all over town this afternoon. Spring seems possible.

On a day when the weather in Pittsburgh shifted back and forth between freezing rain and wet snow, a box of pink grapefruit and fragrant lemons arrived in the mail.  One lemon even had a leaf on it!  What delight, and what a sense of sunshine shared by kind commenter Kathi, who grew them.

The stack of books and papers beside the bed always grows faster than I can read things.  Always room for one more library book.

A small vase.  No flowers outside yet, but with the rain lately, I haven't lingered. We'll see daffodils before long...

Woke up this morning to see snow-covered branches outside the curtains. This, after fifty-degrees-and-raining yesterday. Snow fell off and on all day, and we expect melting weather again tomorrow.

No two apples are the same. As I draw, I try to draw the apple in front of me - what I see - and not the idea of apple that I carry around in my head.
