day2226.jpg

Blue sky and winter trees on the walk home from school. Freezing rain and snow expected overnight, and one by one the districts and schools announce two-hour delays. We haven't heard anything yet, though, and the streets are still clear...

Orange yarn on a blue and green bedspread - intense color on an otherwise gray day.  I used my favorite set of watersoluble oil pastels.

These are a few of the bottles from my grandfather's attic.  They make me think of the ocean, and the light at his house.

Dried rose - I can imagine that it smells of summer, but the reality is more like tea leaves and pencil shavings.

(Day 2222 - a number that looks pretty much the same upside down as rightside up.) I got some lithography crayons to see how I like drawing with them. The lines are probably too big for my sketchbook, but exuberant as well as awkward - soft and dark and quick.

Another view of the same lemon.

I can always find something new to see when I look at a lemon.

Mmm.  Just a few papers, but I needn't look at them tonight.

I've used white china marker in the past for resist drawings. Today I got a black one at the art store. I like to try new materials - sometimes they just unlock a new way of working. I wanted a softer and darker line, though, so I'll keep looking.

This stone was on a shelf in my study. I don't remember saving it, but there it is. A stone from the beach, I think. I move it from the shelf to a drawer. Not exactly sure why. I'll find it again and wonder about it again some time in the future...

Unmatched white sock on the blue and green bedspread? Or snow-covered mountain range in the distance?

day2215.jpg

An unofficial household mascot, found face down in a snowdrift during the great blizzard of last February, is celebrating tonight's small storm.  So far, we have a 2-hour delay called for school tomorrow.  3-6" snow forecast, with wind and increasing cold. Children and adults are hoping, hoping for a snow holiday...

Some of what was on the coffee table by the end of the evening...

Necklace of felted wool beads - the colors make me happy every time I look at it or wear it.

And settled at home again, with time to catch up online. The pause was lovely, but I missed the reading and writing I do on various electronic devices.  Web-connected pages don't replace books for me, but the wild variety of that endless magazine/newspaper/art show/encyclopedia amplifies and extends my experience of the world.

day2210.jpg

We had a day with snow flurries, but warm enough for walking along the trails. (This was drawn from inside, though...)

day2209.jpg

We were away for the long weekend, and I didn't have laptop-style internet access. The rest and family time were wonderful. The apple is a Mutsu Crispin from our farmers' market.

I will be mostly unplugged for the next day or so. I'm drawing, but I don't have an easy way to post. You might find the odd phonecam snap on Twitter, in the meantime. Will catch up here when I turn on the laptop again.

day2206.jpg

We only got a couple of inches of snow this afternoon, with a little more expected overnight. I looked out at the yellow apartment house across the street and enjoyed the warmth of the living room.

I like everything about the camera I got for my birthday last summer except the lens cap - which seems to pop off at the slightest touch.

Far from in season, here, but a reminder that spring will come.

Crumpled, twisted, stretched, a rubber band is resilient, bouncing back to the original simple loop.

Wilted, but still fun to draw - especially with an extra-fine nib.

All by itself on the kitchen counter.  Not sure why it was saved and not eaten or put in the compost bucket.

We got red carnations a little before Christmas, and they are still beautiful - cheerful color on a rainy New Year's Day.
