October 2010 Archives

day2134.jpg

Fished out of the wastebasket at the end of the evening - a manufactured object with an organic-feeling shape.  (Perhaps no two children tear them alike?)
day2133.jpg

Local.  What was left from lunch when I was out and in transit today.

My right hand - brush pen and wash on a Friday night.
day2131.jpg

Out after dark, and noticed branches against the sky. Drew them from memory, later.
day2130.jpg

Older son bought a whole bag of limes on sale today. I'm enjoying the reminder of summer.
day2129.jpg

Gray.  (I don't think this one was ever white.)
day2128.jpg

Three watercolor pencils, drawn in ink, and then with themselves.

Sometimes I joke about citrus being my default subject. I like seeing what textures I can express with my new fountain pen, and this wedge of lime was handy.
day2126.JPG

Waiting for a cup of tea?
day2125.jpg

Sycamore leaf, I think, rather than maple.

day2124.jpg

Not many of these in the sky today. The light everywhere was clear, autumnal.
day2123.jpg

The long shadow of an apple after dinner.

day2122.jpg

I lose myself in tracing the wild conversation in fringe of a favorite scarf, first with fingers, then with pen.

day2121.jpg

Raining tonight, and chilly enough that we've turned the heat on.  Went to look at phones today, as younger son's contract is over, and he's pining for something with data. I like my phone just fine, but he's interested in programming - so wants some variety of Android.
day2120.jpg

Left after dinner. I imagine it as a boat, setting sail across the page.
day2119.jpg

I drew this at night, so they are decaf.
day2118.jpg

Just beginning to show their brightest colors, this week.

The person from whom I buy some of my favorite pens always sends a folded note, handwritten in pen (of course), and sealed with sealing wax. This was drawn with my new pen - a Pilot 78G.  Both pen and note arrived today.
day2116.jpg

This bottle of white glue made me think of a skyscraper this evening - it had a jazz age profile: streamlined, elegant, utilitarian.
day2115.jpg

Drawn with stick, ink, and water.  I learn so much when I let go of control - the work itself takes me to new places.

day2114.jpg

We are having a beautiful early October. Blue skies, warmth, and turning leaves make me want to seize each moment and bank it against the arrival of darker, colder, shorter days.

day2113.jpg

A crumpled cloth handkerchief lets me imagine waves tumbling onto sand.

day2112.jpg

A broken button, actually, so I'm not sure why it was saved,  (If you click to enlarge the drawing, you'll see that the bit of plastic separating the four holes is gone, leaving one odd-shaped hole, and no easy way to attach the button to something.)

day2111.jpg

We have a collection of wooden salad bowls, gotten at rummage sales over the years. Practical, beautiful, sturdy, no two alike.  I love the way each has a personality - character from the original tree, or from the hand of the maker.

One of the lovely things about having older children, is that some nights they make dinner, and we parents can both sit and read for a little while after work.  (Oldest son works here and made kubideh for us tonight.)

Youngest child celebrated her 10th birthday today.  Hooray for double digits!

Jason Das - artist, Urban Sketcher, and website wrangler extraordinaire - identified the problem that had crept into this page's code and suggested the right fix.  (A missing </div>, for you CSS fans, though how & why it went missing is another question entirely. And yes, I will fix the sidebar so it's not at the bottom of this page, but not tonight.)

Thanks also to those of you who sent email to let me know you missed the images, and who did some helpful troubleshooting.

One of the great strengths of the web is the generosity of the people in its communities. I'm ever grateful for the kindness and support.

Drawn in ink and wash, though...
day2107.jpg

Not local. But the colors made me think of today's raininess.
Not sure why last night's post caused a gray box to be drawn over the general index page for the blog.  It happens on different browsers and different devices.  It does not happen (yet) on my creating blog, which was built with the same style sheets.  Individual items seem to be o.k., so if you can get to an individual entry archive, that should be fine.  I will grapple with this more after work tonight.  Just posting this so that you know that I know - and on the off chance that this new entry will somehow fix the issue. (Republishing the index did not fix it last night, and I have learned not to do serious troubleshooting after 11:00 at night!)
day2106.jpg

Not many left in this year's season, and the ones we get are a shadow of their August cousins.  But they are still local, still tomatoes, and we enjoy them while we can.
day2105.jpg

Trees across the field are just beginning to turn. We're visiting family today, and enjoying different views.
