Paper for notes - on the table. I get interested in the space between and around them.

cup

day2102.jpg

One of a pair of wood-fired ceramic cups. They hold the right amount of coffee or tea, and the shape holds heat well.

Rain yesterday, fair today. Autumn chill, hot suppers...green tending toward gold, now.

Once full of coffee, now empty.

Perhaps if I look at this as a collection of abstract shapes? Nah, it's laundry. Still not folded...

We carry more bags with us these days.

Look closely and you'll notice something I didn't see while drawing.  An earlier date on a right hand page?  I had the sketchbook upside down.

Haven't worn these in a while, but after drawing them, I think I'll wear them to work tomorrow.

Book or brick?  If it sits long enough on the table, it might as well be a paperweight. (Now that my library branch has re-opened, I'm checking things out faster than I can read them.)

koi

day2092.jpg

Went to Phipps Conservatory with friends today.  I could have spent many more minutes watching the koi swim in one of the pools.

This may be the last local nectarine of the season.

And when I think more carefully about the Jumblies, I remember that their hands, not toes, were blue.

Far and few, far and few,
            Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

Pebble of rust-stained quartz, picked up by the train tracks last year.

day2086.jpg

An orphan game piece - not sure where I got it, probably in a box of mixed odds and ends at a rummage sale.  Someday, I tell myself, I'll invent a game that connects the found pieces together.

Back-to-school supplies are always full of promise and possibility.  A small pad of post-it notes glows on my bureau - I want to play with the pages...

day2084.jpg

I draw the edges and folds as a landscape, while listening to rain on leaves and street, while smelling damp earth and cooler air.

From memory - the rocks in the woods where we had our picnic last weekend.

And one day later, the pepper is nearly all red.

Hot pepper, just beginning to change color. Cool nights and warm days - the season is beginning to change as well.

day2078.jpg

A local art supply store was having a sale, so I replaced my three Niji waterbrushes - all at once, instead of one at a time, as I usually do.  After about a year of near-daily use, I find they gradually begin to clog, and it's harder and harder to squeeze water from them while I'm painting. With the new ones, all I need is a light press, and water flows into the brush. A treat.

day2077.jpg

Went for a family hike and picnic in the woods today, even though the weather turned cool and drizzly. Trails led through old growth forest - tall, tall hemlocks and pines. When we came out of the forest, we walked back along a creek.  There were footbridges, but also places where you could make it across on stepping stones. Here's our youngest, crossing solo.

bag

day2076.jpg

This is my favorite beach bag / pool bag / picnic bag. We'll use it this weekend, and then it won't get as much use during the fall and winter.

Basil from tonight's supper. (We made a sauce of fresh tomatoes for our pasta.)
