At the end of next week I am going to BlogHer, a conference by and for women bloggers. (I'm speaking on a panel!) In the lead up to the conference, a movement began to get to know other bloggers better before we get there - an online mixer, beginning today. Deb tagged me, so here are the questions she asked in an email interview, with my answers.
1. When did you start blogging and why? Or Talk about your blog. What can I learn about you in under 5 minutes?
I started blogging in 2002, imagining woolgathering as kind of an online commonplace book, a place to do a little bit of semi-public writing and link to things which interested me. In December 2004, I decided I wanted to learn how to draw, and since people said that the way to learn to draw was to draw, I got a little Moleskine sketchbook and began drawing something in it every day. After I'd been drawing for 28 days, I posted a slideshow of the drawings to my blog, and then posted the next day's drawing. . . and I have been drawing and posting daily since then. 565 days and counting of learning to draw in public. You can watch a three and a half minute video I made about my work, here. I live in an old house in Pittsburgh, with three children (5, 11, 15) and a husband who also blogs.
2. Who do you read every day, rain or shine?
My family's blogs here and here, and my rss feeds: BlogHer of course, BoingBoing, LifeHacker, Make, IHeartPGH, Moleskinerie, Everyday Matters, and as many artists' blogs as I can visit. (Check out the Everyday Matters directory for some good places to start, and don't miss singer/songwriter/creative blogger Christine Kane, who doesn't draw (as far as I know) but is someone you might enjoy reading)
3. How do you feel about meeting bloggers in real life? Are you nervous? Will you have great expectations? What do you hope to take away from the BlogHer experience?
I'm excited. Looking forward to lots of new ideas.
4. Are you and your blogging persona the same person?
Sort of. Won't get all post-structural here, but I think my writing voice and speaking voice are similar. My house is FAR far messier than my blog.
5. Soon we're going to meet each other at BlogHer. Important question. How do you party?
Party as a verb always makes me think of Wayne's World, and I know that dates me. . . I prefer wine to beer, and good champagne to anything else. I have a weakness for 80s new wave, bad puns, and free-range conversation.
6. So, what shoes will you be wearing??
Not sure yet. I will pack several pairs of interesting shoes and then panic and wear zori at the last minute.
