May 25: Ironwood trees and view of Hilo Bay from a little rocky beach just a few minutes' walk from Arnott's Lodge, where our group was staying in Hilo. I loved the rope-like roots of the ironwood.

I love, love, LOVE this one Elizabeth! Did you take the time to glaze layers here? I simply adore this image. If you answer with technique tips here I will be checking back and would love to see some details if you feel so inclined.
Thanks! This began as a pen and ink drawing (Pilot Hi-Tec C .025) done at the beach. Then later in the day, I got out my little set of gouache colors and my waterbrush. I like using gouache, because I can vary the opacity, depending on how much water I use. I think I did keep adding layers of color here, as I was trying to get the feel of the shadows on the grey and tan bark. I'm not sure that it was as formal or intentional as glazing always sounds to me. My process was more an evolving one of trial and error. (Hope that helps.)
